Manaea, Chapman power A’s past Padres

SAN DIEGO — Sean Manaea took a perfect game into the sixth inning and Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer to carry the Oakland Athletics to a 10-4 win against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Manaea (8-6) kept the Padres off the basepaths until he walked former Athletics player Jurickson Profar with one out in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Eric Hosmer then lofted a a bloop single to shallow center to end Manaea’s bid for a second career no-hitter. The lefthander no-hit the Boston Red Sox on April 21, 2018.

Until the hit by Hosmer, who reportedly is on the trade block, the Padres hit just one ball out of the infield. That was Jake Cronenworth’s flyball to left for the second out of the fifth.

Manaea struck out nine in six innings and allowed just the one hit and one walk.

Elvis Andrus had three hits and two RBIs for the A’s, who split the twogame series.

Blake Snell (4-4) had another short outing for San Diego, allowing seven runs and seven hits in four innings. The lefty walked four and struck out one.

YANKEES 3, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Aaron Judge went from being a late scratch to hitting a tiebreaking single in a two-run 10th inning as New York beat Tampa Bay for the second straight day.

Judge was taken out of the lineup about 30 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. Although no announcement was made about why, the All-Star right fielder struck out in the fifth pinch-hitting for Estevan Florial.

INDIANS 7, CARDINALS 2

CLEVELAND — Some batters hit for the cycle. Indians slugger Franmil Reyes nearly hit the cyclist.

Reyes homered twice, the first a second-inning blast that bounced out of Progressive Field and almost dinged a bicyclist pedaling on a street next to the park.

SEATTLE — Yuli Gurriel singled, doubled and homered to drive in three runs to lead Houston.

TIGERS 17, TWINS 14

MINNEAPOLIS — Jeimer Candelario and Eric Haase each drove in three runs and Detroit, despite giving up seven homers and not hitting any, outlasted Minnesota.

The Jays won the opener by the same score as Robbie Ray pitched six strong innings and Randal Grichuk

ORIOLES 8, MARLINS 7

BALTIMORE — Ryan McKenna drew a bases-loaded walk from Steven Okert to force in the winning run in the ninth inning, and Baltimore got home runs from Trey Mancini and Pedro Severino in a comeback victory over depleted Miami.

METS 2, BRAVES 1

NEW YORK — Pinch-hitter Brandon Drury delivered a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and right fielder Michael Conforto threw out a runner at the plate in the ninth to preserve New York’s victory.

NATIONALS AT PHILLIES, PPD

PHILADELPHIA — COVID-19 issues among the Washington Nationals prompted Major League Baseball to postpone their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.

The postponement came one day after Nationals star Trea Turner exited the game against Philadelphia in the first inning following his positive test for the virus.

TRADE ROUNDUP

The New York Yankees have reached a deal to get All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because

the deal has not yet been announced and was subject to approval of medical records of the players involved.

Gallo is hitting .223 with 25 homers, 55 RBIs and a major league-leading 74 walks. While he has played right field for Texas, he presumably would play left for the Yankees, who have Aaron Judge as their regular right fielder.

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired All-Star third baseman Eduardo Escobar from the Arizona Diamondbacks for two prospects.

The 32-year-old Escobar made his first All-Star game this season and is batting .246 with 22 homers. The switch-hitter should be a valuable and versatile piece for the first-place Brewers, who are trying to lock down the NL Central.

The Miami Marlins made an impact on the AL West race with two trades.

Miami sent right-handed reliever Yimi García to the Houston Astros, and traded outfielder Starling Marte to the Oakland Athletics.

SIGNING

Second overall pick Jack Leiter signed with the Texas Rangers, getting a $7,922,000 signing bonus that is the largest for a drafted pitcher in 10 years.

The deal for the right-hander out of Vanderbilt, and the son of former big league lefty Al Leiter, was for just above the recommended $7,789,900 slot for the second player taken in baseball’s amateur draft on July 11.

That was the largest signing bonus for a pitcher since Gerrit Cole got $8 million after the Pittsburgh Pirates took him first overall in 2011. That was the last draft before Major League Baseball guidelines for signing bonuses of drafted players went into effect.

The 21-year-old Leiter, who will return to Vanderbilt to continue his education this fall while preparing there for his professional debut in the Rangers organization next year.
