80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor to be remembered at Union Cemetery

It was a beautiful Sunday morning on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. It seemed like the start of another perfect day in paradise.

But the roar of incoming aircraft foretold a different story.

Tuesday, Dec. 7, will mark the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an event that left more than 2,400 dead, the U.S. Pacific fleet heavily damaged — and thrust America fully into the firestorm of World War II.

The United Veterans of Kern Memorial and Pearl Harbor Day Association will host a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony beginning at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday at Historic Union Cemetery, 730 Potomac Ave.

The event will include a ceremonial laying of wreaths, guest speakers and a special musical guest. All in attendance will receive a complimentary lei.

Event organizer Marc Sandall said the ceremony will honor service members from Kern County who perished in the attack, and recognize those who survived.

Remembering Pearl Harbor is essential, Sandall said. Remembering and honoring those who died is basic to what it means to be an American.

The public is invited.

A state fish advisory issued Tuesday for Lake Webb in Kern County provides safe-eating advice for black bass species, Channel Catfish, Common Carp and Inland Silverside.

The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment developed the recommendations based on the levels of mercury found in fish caught from the lake.

When consuming fish from Lake Webb, the following guidelines have been issued:

Women ages 18-49 and children ages 1-17 may safely eat a maximum of three total servings per week of Inland Silverside, or two total servings per week of Common Carp or Channel Catfish, or one total serving per week of black bass species.

Women ages 50 and older and men ages 18 and older may safely eat a maximum of seven total servings per week of Inland Silverside, or six total servings per week of Channel Catfish, or five total servings per week of Common Carp, or two total servings per week of black bass species.

An 8-ounce fish fillet measured prior to cooking is considered one serving, according to the release, which offered the comparison to roughly the size and thickness of a human hand. Children should eat smaller servings. Lake Webb is about 17 miles southwest of Bakersfield.
