BPD: 3 arrested after car chase into Tulare County

Three people were arrested after a car chase on suspicion of attempted murder and carjacking, among other crimes, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Police officers received carjacking reports late Friday night in the area of Bank and F streets. During the theft of a car, one of the suspects attempted to fire a gun, police say.

The gun malfunctioned and the suspects fled with the victim’s vehicle, according to a BPD news release.

Officers located the victim’s vehicle early Saturday morning in the area of Lincoln and Millner streets. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspects failed to yield, police say.

A lengthy car chase ensued on Highway 99 north, past Pixley. The car then began to travel south on Highway 99, according to BPD’s news release.

The car stopped after running out of gas, police say. Two minors and Jose Gonzalez, 18, were arrested by the BPD.

Deputies arrived at the 9700 block of Primrose Avenue on Saturday afternoon, dispatched for a victim of a shooting. They found Ruben Anthony Aguilar Sr., 36, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Kern County coroner’s office.

There is no suspect information at this time.

A head-on collision killed an Arvin man Saturday on Comanche Road, north of Hermosa Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An initial investigation showed another driver, Sarabjit Singh, 24, was driving north on Comanche Road at 55 mph. Arvin man Eleazar Rivera Mejia, 32, was driving south and was approaching Singh, a resident of New Windsor, N.Y., the CHP stated in a news release.

For unknown reasons, the victim crossed over the painted yellow lines into Singh’s path, according to the CHP’s news release.

Police say the cars crashed into each other head-on. Mejia died at the scene, according to the CHP’s news release.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this crash, the

CHP said. The crash is under investigation.

A man died in a crash Sunday on Highway 58, east of Tejon Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Police say a 64-year-old man was traveling east on Highway 58 at 45 mph in a 2000 Freightliner. Another man, 34-year-old Steven Alejandro Pallares, was driving behind the 64-year-old man’s semi.

The victim did not observe the other driver and crashed into his semi for unknown reasons, according to the CHP’s news release.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The crash is under investigation.

A Modesto woman died in a rollover crash on Highway 58, west of Highway 178 in Mojave.

The 45-old-driver, Michelle Jorlei Brotherton, died at the scene 6:34 a.m. Saturday.

The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating the discharge of a firearm inside Walmart at 8400 Rosedale Highway.

The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. Oct. 1, the BPD stated in a news release.

BPD spokesman Sgt. Robert Pair said one shot was fired. A preliminary investigation shows the shot was unintentional and the gun was negligently discharged from the waistband of the suspect, Pair added. No one was injured.

The suspect is described as a white man, in his 40s to 50s with a heavy build. He has brown hair. He was last seen with a mustache, and wearing a white T-shirt, with blue jeans and black boots.

A 21-year-old Bakersfield woman died after crashing her car into the front of a semitruck, according to the Kern County coroner’s office.

The accident occurred on northbound Wheeler Ridge Road, north of Teale Road in Arvin. Jasmine Leann Soofi died at 1:40 a.m. Monday at the scene.

The California Attorney General and several other agencies announced the seizure of about 65,000 marijuana plants from 37 sites in Kern County as part of the California Department of Justice’s annual Campaign Against Marijuana Planting.

“Illegal and unlicensed marijuana planting is bad for our environment, bad for our economy, and bad for the health and safety of our communities,” Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a news release.

CAMP teams seized 1.2 million illegally cultivated marijuana plants and more than 180,000 pounds of illegally processed marijuana throughout several California counties, according to Bonta’s office.

A Bakersfield man died from stab wounds to his throat on Oct. 3, according to the Kern County coroner’s office.

John Anthony Sosa Jr., 48, was stabbed in the 4600 block of American Avenue. He died in a parking lot located in the 1600 block of Valhalla Drive at the scene, on the same day, according to the coroner’s office.

A 20-year-old man died in a crash Sunday night, according to the Kern County coroner.

Bakersfield resident Jose Armando Colorado Vazquez was driving and collided with a sports utility vehicle. The accident happened on South Union Avenue and McKee Road, according to the coroner’s office.

He was taken to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting resulting in the death of a man in Lamont.
