Vehicle hits woman in roadway

The Bakersfield Police Department say a woman lying down in the roadway was struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in the 3000 block of Brundage Lane.

Police responded at around 7:43 p.m., a BPD news release says. The woman was taken to a local hospital and the driver remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

BPD does not consider alcohol and speed to be factors in the incident.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified a man who was struck and killed by a train last week near the intersection of Baker and Sumner streets.

Bakersfield resident Frank Sanchez Jr., 50, was struck at about 5:47 p.m. Wednesday, according to a coroner’s report. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he died at 1:04 a.m. on Thursday.

An autopsy will be completed to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified a woman who died after a vehicle she was driving overturned on Highway 119 just north of Highway 43.

The coroner said Taft resident Sherrie Ann Newer-Blaylock, 56, died 10:19 p.m. Sept. 19 at the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The Bakersfield Police Department is requesting the public’s help in identifying two people suspected of numerous thefts at Valley Plaza mall.

BPD described one of the suspects in a news release as a Hispanic woman, 30 to 35 years old, with black hair, a cheetah print COVID-19 mask, wearing a black shirt, blue jeans with a Raiders tattoo on her right hand.

The agency said the other suspect is a Hispanic man, also 30 to 35 years old, with a medium build, a blue COVID-19 mask, wearing a red hat and a yellow shirt.

The Bakersfield Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance identifying a suspect it alleges was involved in a catalytic converter theft at 1 p.m. Aug. 19 in the 11000 block of Stockdale Highway.

BPD described the suspect as a Hispanic man, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a short fade haircut, wearing a black shirt, with tattoos on his face, neck and right forearm.

Delano resident Christopher Howard, 33, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to being a felon in possession of a handgun, according to a news release from the U.S.

Department of Justice.

On April 28, police officers encountered Howard in Delano carrying a bag with a loaded, 9 millimeter-caliber handgun and an additional, high-capacity magazine, the release said.

Howard has been convicted of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, escape and two counts of second-degree burglary, and so according to the release he cannot lawfully possess firearms.

The case was part of a joint investigation by the FBI and the Delano Police Department.

Sentencing in Eastern District Court is scheduled for Dec. 13. Howard faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher D. Baker is prosecuting the case.
